Letter from the Principal
September 17, 2004Greetings! Welcome to Adams Memorial Middle School (AMMS). I am very pleased to have your interest in our school and the dynamic programs that take place within our walls.AMMS is an exciting place to be. Each day brings new learning opportunities for staff and students alike. Our focus is on providing an environment that fosters academic, civic, and social growth. This growth is nurtured and led by a caring, dedicated group of teachers, paraprofessionals, guidance/school adjustment counselors, a school nurse, cafeteria, custodial, and office staff members. We are truly a team and function like an extended family for the students entrusted to our care.
An important part of our team is our community, in particular the parents. We are fortunate to be surrounded by rich resources and often work in partnerships to enhance the offerings to students. Parents should feel welcome to share ideas and offer input and are encouraged to contact teachers or the administration. In addition to before/after school hours there is also a walk-in hour during the school year on Wednesdays from 12:00-1:00. Staff, students and community members are encouraged to use this time to meet with the Principal.
As a school that is based on community, our students are also involved in giving through community service learning projects. Community Service Learning (CSL) is the process of teaching academic skills through the process of providing service that fills a direct need. The difference between this practice and straight community service is that CSL is intertwined with the curriculum. A community needs is identified, students work to identify ways to fill that need, and academic skills (often cross-curricular) are taught throughout the project. At the present, teachers in all three grades are completing CSL projects with their classes.
In addition to CSL projects there are also a wide range of opportunities for students to be involved. Student Council, basketball, Lego League, academic assistance, bicycle riding, computer time, and technology-related activities are just some of the ways our students busy themselves after school hours at different times of the year.
Keeping with a true middle school concept, AMMS embraces the philosophy that educating the whole individual is of utmost importance for this age. Throughout the year students will be reminded that we are here to impress upon them academic, civic, and social standards. These three areas are central to our beliefs and values and serve as a direction for all that we do. Expect to hear the students talk about their experiences and identify the academic, civic, and social concepts that are stressed through the lesson(s).
Lastly, continue to visit our web site. Periodic updates will be provided, including links to areas that will be of interest or assistance. I also encourage you to contact the Office with information that you feel may be pertinent to our mission and share potential links with us. The site/article will be reviewed and when possible added to our web page.
I'll end as I began with a sincere "thank you" for visiting our site. Feel free to contact me to visit the school during off hours as requests will be honored where/when possible.
Sincerely,Kimberly Roberts-Morandi
Principal
